    • Bespoke masterpiece with strong feature statements throughout

August 30, 2018 by magentadotbrands.com in Bathroom, Bluestone tiles, Carrara marble, Entrance area, Limestone plank tiles, Natural stone Comments Off on Bespoke masterpiece with strong feature statements throughout

This Fendalton home was one of the Terranova Tiling team’s favourite tiling projects in 2017.

Sumich Chaplin Architects in collaboration with Alexandra Blair Interior Design have created a bespoke masterpiece with strong feature statements throughout.

Limestone plank flooring in a herringbone pattern in the grand entry, rare bluestone tiles on the bathroom floors and Carrara Marble in various sizes in the master ensuite creates a coherent feeling of understated opulence.

The effective pairing of matched marble mosaic in the shower base and adjoining toilet, the impressive feature wall behind the bath laid in herringbone pattern made the master ensuite a very memorable project for the technical challenges and degree of difficulty. Ultimately it was very satisfying for the Terranova team to faultlessly achieve the refined aesthetic and intelligence of the designer’s vision.

      Designer statement

This renovation created a serene, sensual ensuite bathroom using space gained from a poorly functioning wardrobe. It was part of a major remodel of the entire master bedroom wing, which has been transformed into a private sanctuary for the clients.

The bathroom needed to feature clean lines and textural finishes, with attractive yet simply styled fittings and fixtures. There was also a requirement for twin basins, a walk-in shower freestanding bath and toilet.

The existing space needed some tweaking due to the existing roof line which was low in places. This determined the room layout.

Natural light from the shuttered window floods a dual walk-in shower that takes centre stage at one end of the room. The space enhances the room’s symmetry in benefits from the extra height created by the roof gable.

Twin Vanity bowls set on a custom-made piece of furniture that provides plenty of storage. Through the storage is available in the mirror cabinet.

The freestanding bath sits opposite the vanity, with a timber-lined niche rebated into the tiled wall. This is the perfect place for candles and a glass of wine.

The pallete is kept simple with the mix of finishes providing a sense of warmth and personality. While the design uses all the available space, the careful play on form and finish ensures the desired sense of luxury.

      Judges comments

This renovation had an awkward roofline to deal with, and was a difficult room to get light into. An innovative approach to the design has made best use of the space and this is enhanced by an accomplished selection of materials. The vanity in particular is a beautiful piece of design.

The National Kitchen and Bathroom Association’s annual design competition is where Davinia Sutton/Sam Lawrence’s creative inspiration and work practice—very attentive to and concerned with accuracy and detail—their impeccable choice of materials, and Terranova’s artisan tile installation all combine to shine like gold. As a whole in this Bathroom Design of the Year, gold has been rewarded for providing industry direction and leadership by example. Terranova tiling is fastidious in their work and very proud to have been recognised as part of the team that made this modern, discrete, natural stone sanctuary the three time NKBA bathroom award winner for Davinia Sutton and Sam Lawrence in 2015.

      Designer statement

The clients’ brief was to achieve a spacious feel for their master ensuite, despite the confined architectural space. They wanted the design to reflect modern architecture, but also create a private sanctuary. They requested a design with refined lines, beautiful natural surfaces and attractive fittings and fixtures.
The response was a bathroom that has a calm, serene ambience. The design reflects contemporary restraint, while the layout forms a practical and private feature shower zone, creating the perfect place to restore mind and body.
The custom-made vanity top, formed from natural honed slate, is pinned between walls and elevated from the floor. While enhancing the sense of space and being easy to clean, it also adds a wow factor and makes a sharp contrast to the natural travertine walls. The mitred timber drawer unit and the mirror above provide ample storage and functionality.
The expanse of natural stone tiles that line the entire space, provides the room with a sense of warmth, texture, serenity and luxury. The tiling is in simple brick bond format—referencing the architecture, while also playing on use of form. The design utilises all the available space, and the clever mix of selected finishes and fixtures provides the room with a spacious, free-flowing feel.
The highest quality fittings, careful lighting detail and organic palette further enhance the Zen-like atmosphere.

      Judges’ comments

Bathroom-Design-of-the-Year-booklet-coverThe attention to detail in this bathroom is impressive—right down to the way the handle has been formed as part of the glass shower door. It’s a simple palette with subtle but contrasting colour. And simple ideas have been developed and followed through. The lighting is particularly well planned.
